Part I
The focus of this introductory week is to expose you to ethical theory and the relationship between ethics and the law. Read the following: Traditional and Contemporary Hippocratic Oath: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/body/hippocratic-oath-today.html and identify whether some or all of the guidelines have been transformed into laws or whether they have remained as guiding ethical principles and issues. Compare and contrast Hippocratic Oath with AMA Code of Ethics: http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/physician-resources/medical-ethics/code-medical-ethics.page?
Part II
Answer the following questions:
* What shuold be the role of ethics in legal matters and practices?
* How might ethical principles be similar to laws and regulations? How do they differ?
* What role does Virtue have in professionalism and ethics in the clinical setting? What about
the role of virtue in the legal setting?
* What are the benefits and burdens of Codes of Ethics? How should they be enforceable?
* What are the limits to our obligations? Are the legal exceptions to a duty to treat warranted?
