Textbooks

The selection of textbooks is the prerogative of the instructor(s) and subject to departmental policies. Per University rule, departments and faculty members are required to keep in mind their responsibilities to students in choosing textbooks. Textbooks should be selected carefully, and cost should be kept as low as possible to be consistent with quality education. Specifically, University rule requires that faculty meet the following expectations when requiring textbooks:

• No textbook should be required by an instructor for any class if it is to be used only for occasional consultation;
• Requiring the purchase of a textbook places an obligation upon them to ensure that that text is an integral and extensively used part of the course;
• Changes of textbooks should be made only for sound pedagogical reasons. Normally textbooks should be retained by an instructor for at least one year. Last minute changes in book orders should not be made, since such alterations are inconsiderate of both students and those responsible for the ordering and stocking of course materials (3359-20-05.3 – Textbooks, teaching aids, supplies, offices, and classrooms).
• If a faculty member authored the text/materials that will be used in a class, they many not receive money from the sale of those materials.

The University Bookstores provide on-campus resources to support faculty and departments. The Bookstores use FacultyEnlight to make it “easier…to research, discuss, discover, and adopt learning materials….to help choose the best materials for courses so that students’ learning experience is the best it can possibly be.” This program provides information on what is being used by disciplines at other schools and enables searches by ISBN, author, and/or titles. The same site is used to submit faculty book choices, for one course or multiple courses.
