Microbes That Breathe Metals: The Secret Life Behind Rust
Dr. John Senko and Charitha Basnayaka — Senko Lab

Have you ever wondered why metal rusts even in places with no oxygen, like mud or wetland soil? In many cases, the answer is microorganisms. Some bacteria can use metals instead of oxygen for energy. In the Senko Lab, we study how these microbes live in natural sediments and interact with metals.
You’ll take part in activities you normally wouldn’t see in a classroom like growing microbes from environmental samples, working in a anaerobic chamber, and observing rust develop on metal.
What you’ll do
You’ll work alongside graduate students and become part of the lab. You will:
- Grow microbes from sediment samples
- Work in an anaerobic chamber
- Observe rust formation on metal samples
- Run simple chemical measurements
- Learn basic lab skills (pipetting, media preparation, centrifugation, sterilization)
No previous research experience is required. We will guide you step-by-step.
Why join?
- Friendly and supportive lab environment
- Real hands-on research experience
- Learn how research actually works
- Helpful preparation for graduate school or science careers
Time:
About 8–10 hours per week, flexible with your classes.
Interested in microbiology or your first research experience? Apply and be part of our lab. We’re excited to welcome you.
