Scholarships Billiards Tournament Is Nov. 16

11/01/2002

Akron, Ohio, Nov. 1, 2002 University of Akron students will have the opportunity to rack 'em up and win scholarship money at the second Barry Lefkowitz Scholarship Billiards Tournament.

The event will start at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16 in the Gardner Student Center Game Room. Registration begins at 10 a.m.

The inaugural tournament was founded in February 2002 and funded by Barry Lefkowitz, senior vice president at Salomon Smith Barney in Cleveland. Lefkowitz, a 1966 marketing graduate of the University, was billiards champion at UA in 1965-66.

There will be two types of play at the tournament: 9-ball and 8-ball. Players may enter one or both types of play.

Lefkowitz notes that any students who won in the previous tournament will play single elimination in this tournament. All other students will play double elimination.

Competitors in 8-ball will use new rules designed by Lefkowitz to make winning possible for the skilled and novice alike. Lefkowitz says he hopes the new 8-ball rules soon will be recognized by the Billiard Congress of America and named The University of Akron 8-Ball Rules.

With the new rules, more luck and more skill are added to the game, he says.

First-, second- and third-place winners in each bracket will win $750, $500 and $250 scholarships, respectively.

Players must be current UA students taking a minimum of nine credit hours. The $10 registration can be made now through Nov. 7. All participants will receive a T-shirt. For more information on the tournament call 330-972-6537.
