Biography

I'm a fish guy—I study how fish do what they do. I'm also a fat guy—I'm interested in what cells and organisms do with fat. Finally, I'm a temperature guy—I spend time thinking about how temperature affects cell function. For the past 15 years or so, we have focused on the hormone leptin. Leptin is famous for being the ‘fat control’ hormone in humans, and it has received LOTS of scientific attention (~50,000 studies). Our assertion is that we don’t know enough about how leptin evolved-and that by studying its evolutionary history, we will have a better understanding of how it works in humans. We have spent most of our time studying leptin in zebrafish (with Qin Liu), but also have studies in lizards (with Peter Niewiarowski), birds (with Joel Duff and Jeremy Prokop), and whales (with Hope Ball and Joel Duff). We use lots of molecular techniques, including CRISPr, qPCR, next-generation sequencing, bioinformatic analyses, and protein expression techniques.
