Graduate Faculty Appointment
There is only one graduate faculty of The University of Akron. Within that graduate faculty, members have different responsibilities.
- Category I: teaching of master's and doctoral courses and serving as a member of thesis and dissertation committees – for duration of faculty’s appointment at the University
- Category II: Category I responsibilities plus directing of master’s theses
- 5-year renewal cycle
- Category III: Category II responsibilities plus directing of doctoral dissertations
- 5-year renewal cycle
To ensure minimum quality standards on a university-wide basis, the following shall be the minimum criteria for applying and being recommended for Category I: Candidates must possess a terminal degree appropriate to their field. Please refer to SOE Graduate Faculty Membership Criteria for more details.
Current Graduate Faculty:
- If they are current Category I status, upon completion of their current graduate faculty appointment, they will be placed on new Category I status, or they can apply for either new Category II or III status.
- If they are current Category II status, upon completion of their current graduate faculty appointment, they will be placed on new Category I status, or they can apply for either new Category II or III status.
- Faculty will continue to have new Category I status for appointment duration, renewal is not required.
New Graduate Faculty:
- New faculty holding a terminal degree appropriate to their field may apply for Category I status by completing the ‘Graduate Faculty Application’, checking the Category I box and obtaining chair and dean signatures - no additional materials are required.
- New faculty may also apply for Category II or III status as they meet the additional requirement.
