Graduate Faculty Appointment

There is only one graduate faculty of The University of Akron. Within that graduate faculty, members have different responsibilities.

  • Category I: teaching of master's and doctoral courses and serving as a member of thesis and dissertation committees – for duration of faculty’s appointment at the University
  • Category II: Category I responsibilities plus directing of master’s theses
    - 5-year renewal cycle
  • Category III: Category II responsibilities plus directing of doctoral dissertations
    - 5-year renewal cycle

To ensure minimum quality standards on a university-wide basis, the following shall be the minimum criteria for applying and being recommended for Category I: Candidates must possess a terminal degree appropriate to their field. Please refer to SOE Graduate Faculty Membership Criteria for more details.

  • If they are current Category II status, upon completion of their current graduate faculty appointment, they will be placed on new Category I status, or they can apply for either new Category II or III status.
  • Faculty will continue to have new Category I status for appointment duration, renewal is not required.
