Biography

Dr. Abbas has been a member of the Civil Engineering department since 2005.  Prior to joining UA, he worked at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) in McLean, VA, as a Highway Research Fellow and as a Highway Research Engineer. Dr. Abbas is the recipient of several prestigious awards including The University of Akron, College of Engineering Outstanding Researcher Award in 2018, the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) Excellence in Civil Engineering Education (ExCEEd) Award in 2009, and the Eisenhower Graduate Research Fellowship Award in Transportation Engineering (one out of 15 nationally) for the years 2002-2004.  Dr. Abbas has been a PI or Co-PI on more than $4,000,000 of external research grants from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT). 


Research

Modeling of geomaterials, highway material characterization, quality control and quality assurance of aggregate materials and asphalt mixtures, pavement design and performance modeling, traffic characterization for pavement design, pavement maintenance and rehabilitation, pavement marking selection and evaluation, traffic-related noise measurement and analysis.
