Biography

Dr. K.T. Tan joined the Mechanical Engineering Department in 2014. Prior to this appointment, he was a research scientist at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering in Singapore. Dr. Tan has published more than 30 peer-reviewed papers in many top journals. He has received numerous awards and honors, including UA Faculty Research Committee (FRC) Summer Fellowship (2019), Firestone Research Initiative Fellowship (2018), LaunchTown Entrepreneurship Award (2016), Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Invitational Fellowship (2016), International Commission for Acoustics (ICA-ASA) Young Scientist Grant (2013), and the Metamaterials Congress Travel Grant Award for Young Researchers (2012). Dr. Tan has received 2 multi-year grants from the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) to investigate the behavior of composites in arctic conditions.


Research

Impact, damage and fracture of composite materials, wave propagation in acoustic metamaterials, unique behavior of mechanical metamaterials, bioinspired structures and materials.
