Alumnus' bequest creates legacy, supports team he cherished

Perhaps because of the enjoyment he derived from Zips athletics, James P. Hinson sought ways to make a profound impact. He did so in 1998 when he bequeathed his home, anonymously, to The University of Akron’s men’s soccer program. Seventeen years ago, this grateful and generous alumnus ensured he would forever play a role in the program’s future success.

An Akron native, Hinson died earlier this year at age 66, following a battle with cancer. A Buchtel High School graduate, he served honorably in the U.S. Navy before enrolling at UA and earning an undergraduate degree in nursing in 1989. His allegiance to Zips athletics took root early, particularly his love of men’s soccer. He discovered the game as a youth in junior high school and became an ardent Zips supporter. Hinson, in fact, was a fixture at many home games and often traveled outside Akron to see the team play. Knowing one day his bequest would boost the program undoubtedly made his experiences with the soccer team all the more memorable.
