Chemical engineering student receives oil and gas industry scholarship

Payton Taylor is the recent recipient of an Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program scholarship. The program awarded scholarships to 54 students, representing 30 counties across Ohio, 20 different colleges and more than a dozen energy-related majors.

Payton, of Hopedale, Ohio, is a rising sophomore at The University of Akron studying chemical engineering.

Growing up, Payton was always interested in chemistry. His community was very rural, and he grew up surrounded by oil and gas companies. After he job shadowed at a local Marathon plant, he fell in love with the industry and knew he wanted to pursue chemical engineering. He was familiar with UA’s excellent reputation in engineering, which led him to enroll in the chemical engineering undergraduate program.

Payton is a member of the UA student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and he plays intermural football and basketball.

“Beyond the obvious financial support, which of course I am very grateful for, it feels amazing to be recognized by the industry I am excited to have a career in,” says Payton.
