Dr. Brad Maguth, associate professor of social studies education in the LeBron James Family Foundation College of Education, was recently awarded “Best Research Paper” by the International Assembly of the National Council for the Social Studies. This accolade is presented to an outstanding research paper that makes a significant contribution in advancing global learning. The award was presented at the 98th Annual Conference of the National Council for the Social Studies in Chicago, Ill.

Maguth’s paper, titled, “The United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals as a Global Content Framework?” will be featured in the spring issue of the Journal of International Social Studies. His research considers the use of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a prospective global content knowledge framework to impart global learning in social studies education.

In this study, middle-grades Ancient World History content standards from two countries, China and the United States, were reviewed to evaluate the degree of their alignment to the United Nations’ SDGs. Maguth discusses the implications of findings on the educative mission of preparing global learners to live-up to the expectations of the SDGs in schools and in the social studies.
