The University of Akron’s Department of Geosciences continues its long-standing tradition of outdoor, hands-on learning. From the days when Professor Claypool (left) led students into the stone quarries of Peninsula, Ohio, to Professor Peck (right) guiding today’s Rivers class down the Cuyahoga River, fieldwork has been central to the program.

On Sept. 20, 2025, students in the Rivers course spent the day collecting hydrologic, geomorphologic and sedimentologic data along the Cuyahoga. These findings will be analyzed and built upon throughout the semester as students develop research reports. The experience not only strengthens technical skills but also connects students directly with the landscapes and waterways that shape Northeast Ohio.
