The two educational institutions announced that Stark State transfer students who have completed an associate degree and fulfilled the requirements of the Honors Program at SSC will be admitted to the UA Williams Honors College when they enter a bachelor’s degree program at The University of Akron.

“SSC students accepted to the honors program at UA will have access to beneficial resources such as collaborative advising and the Honors College Speaker Series even before they begin classes at UA,” said John Wiencek, UA’s executive vice president and provost. “We want to recognize the hard work and academic excellence the students displayed during their community college experience.”

“We are delighted to have this seamless transfer pathway for our honors students into UA's honors program,” said Lada Gibson-Shreve, Stark State provost and chief academic officer. “This transfer pathway supports the success of Stark State honors students while providing them with the benefits of UA's honors program as they achieve their goal of a bachelor's degree at UA.”

Transfer students will be able to apply a maximum of 12 hours of honors course credits toward UA’s Williams Honors Program. Once admitted, the students must satisfy the requirements of the Honors College, including the Honors Colloquium courses and an Honors Research Project.

Outstanding SSC students may qualify for two UA scholarships:

  • Students enrolled in Stark State College’s Honors Program will receive a UA Honors Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 if their GPA is between 3.25-3.59. They will receive $1,500 if their GPA is 3.60 or above.
  • Students transferring from Stark State (or any other regionally accredited college or university) in Fall 2022 or later will receive a UA Provost Scholarship of $1,000 if their GPA is between 3.25-3.49 or $2,500 if their GPA is 3.50 or higher.

Both UA scholarships are awarded for six semesters of full-time attendance or until the completion of a bachelor's degree, whichever comes first subject to appropriate renewal criteria.
