Magazine Counts UA Among 'Schools That Rule'

10/22/2004

Akron, Ohio, Oct. 22, 2004 The University of Akron is one of 14 Schools That Rule in the U.S., according to a national magazine. In its September/October issue, Careers & Colleges magazine cited the University as an example of under-recognized schools that deserve a closer look.

In compiling its list, the magazine considered factors such as strong academic programs, terrific professors, a vibrant student life or other opportunities for personal development.

As a public research university, Akron has gained national recognition for its programs in international business, dance, law, gerontological nursing, applied politics, sales and marketing, industrial psychology, and engineering, the magazine says in describing The University of Akron. Its polymer science and engineering program is one of the best in the country. Beyond the cutting-edge curriculum, the university offers students proximity to a host of cultural, sports, and recreational venues. Plus, Zippy the Kangaroo is a mascot students can really root for, and the tuition won't break the bank.

As one of the Schools That Rule, UA was listed among 14 universities including the University of Alabama, Central Michigan University, Montana State University and the University of Portland.

This recognition by Careers & Colleges magazine tells the whole world what we in northern Ohio already know, says Dr. Luis M. Proenza, president of The University of Akron. With our talented faculty, exceptional capacity to enable student success, and the recently completed physical enhancements to our campus, The University of Akron is setting the standard for excellence and student success.
