Sept. 7, 2007 - The University of Akron Research Foundation has reported that fiscal year 2006-07 was a record-setting period for UA research activities.
Awards for externally funded research and other sponsored programs totaled $32.8 million for 459 projects in 2006-07, a record high. That total is up 6 percent from the previous fiscal year's $30.7 million; there were 407 projects for the prior fiscal year.
Licensing revenue of $6.3 million for UA patents and technology for the fiscal year was an all-time high and a 231 percent increase from $1.9 million in 2005-06. The increase was due largely to a one-time, higher-than-normal licensing fee during the period.
"The success of our externally funded research projects and licensing is a clear indication of the reputation and excellence of University of Akron researchers," says Dr. George Newkome, UA's vice president for research and dean of the graduate school. "I applaud them for their accomplishments; their contributions to our ever-growing research portfolio are a source of pride for everyone at the university. In these challenging years of funding for public universities, it is encouraging to see their successes."
