Morell Center Hosts National Security and European Defense Leaders
The Michael J. Morell Center for Intelligence and Security Studies at The University of Akron (UA) will host two public events on Monday, Oct. 13, in the Common Room at the Drs. Gary B. and Pamela S. Williams Honors College. Former CIA Director, and the Center’s namesake, Michael Morell will lead conversations with Beth Sanner, former deputy director of National Intelligence and daily briefer to President Donald J. Trump, and Aivars Puriņš, Latvia’s defense state secretary, who will discuss European security on NATO’s border with Russia. Both talks are free and open to the public.
At 5 p.m., Sanner will join Morell for a conversation titled “A Career in the Leadership of America’s National Security.” A much-decorated veteran of the U.S. Intelligence Community, Sanner will reflect on her decades of service, including her time as the President Trump’s daily intelligence briefer in his first term.
At 7 p.m., Morell will join Puriņš for a conversation titled “European Security: The View from Latvia.” Puriņš will provide perspective on Europe’s security challenges and Latvia’s pivotal role as a NATO frontline state bordering Russia.
“These programs bring extraordinary access to world leaders in intelligence and defense,” said Dr. Karl Kaltenthaler, director of the Morell Center. “Our students, faculty, and community will gain firsthand insight into the challenges facing both U.S. national security and European stability.”
The Michael J. Morell Center for Intelligence and Security Studies in the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences prepares the security professionals of tomorrow by bringing together security practitioners for internships, training, research, and education in the areas of intelligence, national security, and cybersecurity. Named in honor of UA alumnus Michael Morell ’80, who served 33 years at the CIA including roles as acting director and deputy director, the Center reflects his lifelong commitment to safeguarding the nation and developing the next generation of security leaders.
