Dr. Hossein Tavana named 2025 fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society
BMES President Dr. Shelly Sakiyama-Elbert presents the fellow certificate to Dr. Hossein Tavana.
The University of Akron’s College of Engineering and Polymer Science proudly congratulates Dr. Hossein Tavana, professor of biomedical engineering and department chair, on being named a 2025 fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), one of the highest professional honors within the field.
The BMES fellow distinction recognizes individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the biomedical engineering community through research, innovation, education and service. This year, Tavana joins a select group of only 13 members elevated to fellow status.
Tavana was recognized for his pioneering research in cancer tissue engineering and modeling, as well as his leadership and mentorship in advancing diversity and excellence in biomedical engineering. His work continues to push the boundaries of cell and tissue-based technologies that have the potential to transform biomedical research and therapeutic development.

“Dr. Tavana’s recognition as a BMES fellow reflects the national impact of his research and his dedication to advancing biomedical engineering,” said Dr. Craig Menzemer, dean of the College of Engineering and Polymer Science. “He exemplifies the spirit of innovation and excellence that defines our college and inspires our students and colleagues alike.”
Tavana was formally recognized during the 2025 BMES annual meeting in San Diego, where the new class of fellows was honored for their achievements.
