Graduate School Admissions Requirements

An entering student must have an undergraduate degree with a major in Biology or equivalent training. In addition, entering students must have/provide the following:

1. A minimum grade point average of 3.00(4.00=A) overall and a 3.00 average in Biology(minimum 32 semester hours or equivalent).

2. Competence in Chemistry and Mathematics is expected.

3. Entering students must provide scores from any one or more of the following standardized tests: The General GRE, the Biology-specific GRE, or the MCAT. Students are expected to score above the 25th percentile to be competitive for admission (provisional or full). Full admission is required for a teaching assistantship and tuition waiver.

4. A letter of interest indicating the proposed area of specialization and possible advisors in the Biology department is required.

5. Foreign students, in addition to the above requirements, must have a score of 220 or more on the TOEFL and one of the following a) >=23 on the “S” portion of the TOEFL b) >=50 on the Test of Spoken English(TSE) or c) a passing score on the U-Adept test.

To apply for graduate studies please follow the following steps:

  1. Start the application process to the Graduate School Online Application.

  2. Have your College transcripts sent to the graduate school.

  3. Have your GRE scores, MCAT scores, DAT scores or GRE Biology subject test scores sent to the Biology Department. At the same time make sure they are entered into the Graduate School online system.

  4. Send in three letters of recommendation to the Biology Department.

It takes some time for your application to get from the Graduate School to the Biology dept. If you want to know whether Biology has your application, contact londraville@uakron.edu.  You should apply as soon as possible, though we do accept applications up to four weeks before the beginning of classes. However, the sooner your application arrives and is completed the greater the chance of securing financial aid. As soon as we have the completed application, the review process will begin and the decisions about acceptance will occur soon thereafter.
