Message from the Chair

Deborah Owens

Deborah Owens, Ph.D.
Chair, Associate Professor of Marketing

Welcome to the Department of Marketing at The University of Akron, where we emphasize applied learning and decision-making across four major program areas: integrated marketing communications, marketing management, sales management and international business.

Our strong relationships with local firms and marketing talent, provide our students with engaging experiential learning opportunities, guest speakers, and internships that prepare them for successful careers.

I invite you to join us and learn why marketing is the most innovative and exciting business discipline.

The marketing discipline is built on learning skills associated with bringing a product or service to market including product design and development, distribution, promotion and pricing. It also focuses on how to keep products competitive through branding, customer service and innovation. The marketing perspective puts the customer first, focuses on long run goals, and is critical to the successful operation of any organization, including not-for-profit organizations and government agencies.

I hope you will consider pursuing a degree in marketing at the University of Akron.

We have full-time faculty, who have significant expertise and experience in Professional Selling, Brand Management, Marketing Research, Digital Marketing and Marketing Strategy to name a few areas.

Our highly engaged students are active across campus. This may be in Greek life, as a Division I student athlete, intramural sports participant, band member, or a member in one of our many campus organizations. We have many student run business clubs, such as the American Marketing Association and PSE (Pi Sigma Epsilon) our Professional Sales and Marketing Association, or our new Women in Business student chapter. We also have students engaged in a variety of leadership and service organizations, such as the Smucker’s Institute for Leadership Advancement, and Zips for Haiti, that is marketing coffee from Haiti to help fund a scholarship for a Haitian student.

With the help of our institutes and advisory boards we are fortunate to have corporate partners that are dedicated to our program. Through experiential learning in the classroom, mentoring, internships and career development programming, we have community volunteers that help us bring the “real world of marketing” to each and every student. We would love to invite you to be a part of the Marketing Department of The University of Akron.
