Speaker series sponsored by Eileen Burg draws local health-care experts

Massive changes in the health-care industry dominated the discussion during the most recent H. Peter Burg Personal Leadership and Development Speaker Series, held November 19 for students in the College of Business Administration at The University of Akron.

UA alumnus William Considine ’69, president and CEO of Akron Children’s Hospital, moderated the series, which featured panelists Beverly Bokovitz, chief nursing offer at Akron General Medical Center; UA alumnus Martin Hauser ’75, ’87, CEO of SummaCare; and Charles Taylor, dean of the College of Pharmacy at NEOMED.

Titled “Healthcare Careers after the Implementation of the Affordable Care Act,” the discussion focused on new trends in the medical industry, along with potential growth areas and the skills needed to be successful in the changing health-care arena.

For example, many health-care systems, now increasingly faced with financial challenges, are seeking employees with experience in project management or ‘lean’ efforts more commonly used in manufacturing settings to increase efficiency.

The H. Peter Burg Personal Leadership and Development Speaker Series was created in 2012 with a gift from Eileen E. Burg ’11, who wished to provide an opportunity for UA business students to learn firsthand from local business and community leaders. The series honors the legacy of her late husband, H. Peter Burg ’68, 70, former FirstEnergy chairman and CEO and a dedicated University of Akron alumnus.

Along with Considine, past H. Peter Burg Personal Leadership and Development speakers have included Luis Proenza, president of The University of Akron; James Griffith, president and CEO of Timken; Steve Marks ’82, CEO of Main Street Gourmet; Kristie Van Auken, chief marketing and communications officer for Akron Canton Regional Airport; Steve McClatchy, international speaker, trainer, consultant, and author; and Laura Culp ’91, a partner in tax services with Brockman, Coats, Gedelian & Company.
