At the beginning of April, six students from the Surveying and Mapping Program traveled to Washington, D.C. to compete in the 22nd annual National Society of Professional Surveyors and Young Surveyors Network student competition.

At the event, twenty-five teams from across the United States and the Territory of Puerto Rico competed and performed various skills tests with antique surveying equipment on the National Mall at the base of the Washington Monument. The University of Akron (UA) was represented by team members John Castle (team captain), Zac Clevenger, Seth Boyd, Tristan Zawalsh, Alex Garcia and Frank Powers, and faculty advisor Joseph D. Fenicle, PS and Ann Besch, PS.

The team also participated in a six-hour monument scavenger hunt where they traveled over 14 miles on bikes alone and then utilized public transportation (which include subways and buses), and even ended up running to catch Ubers to gain maximum points.

"Throughout the competition, I held tight to my three goals — to have fun safely, to make friends and to make memories," said Prof. Fenicle. "The results of these goals exceeded all expectations, and I could not be prouder of this group and how well they represented our Program and The University of Akron as a whole."

UA’s team placed eighth overall and received an Honorable Mention, and they look forward to competing again next year. The event, sponsored by the Young Surveyor’s Network, also provided numerous opportunities for students to network, socialize and make new friends.
