Growing new companies to benefit the region is central to the missions of The University of Akron and its Research Foundation (UARF). The groups currently run dozens of programs to assist entrepreneurs and train future innovators.

  • Six industry executives volunteer their time through UARF to make connections between entrepreneurs, industry, community organizations and the University
  • ARCHAngels presents leading edge technologies from Northeast Ohio startup companies and the University to a network of 450 investors and business leaders
  • Akron Innovation Campus tests a new model of mixed-use buildings where independent companies, UA Research Foundation staff and university startups share space adjacent to campus
  • Northeast Ohio’s first student-run venture fund offers hands-on experience in startups and entrepreneurial finance, conducts detailed due diligence and invests in companies that could create jobs in the region
  • UA’s 11 colleges are developing a cross-disciplinary entrepreneurship program

Recent success stories

  • MemPro Ceramics moved from Colorado to Akron to access UA’s research expertise in nanofiber filtration; in addition to working with UA researchers to test and develop its products, MemPro has presented to the ARCHAngels investment network and received support from UARF’s senior fellows
  • Segmint, a new company developing marketing software, got office space at the Akron Innovation Campus in exchange for equity
  • UA startup Akron Software Corp. has offices at the Akron Innovation Campus, received funding through one of UARF’s partner organizations, and gets regular advice and assistance from UARF’s senior fellows
