H. Elastic breakup in simple shear of melts

The ultimate question is to determine whether our observations from entangled PBD solutions would apply to entangled melts. Can we apply what we learned from rheology of entangled solutions to describe and anticipate nonlinear flow behavior of entangled melts? We have succeeded in our pursuit along this direction.

Movie 14

shows dramatic failure of a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) in simple shear between two parallel plates at a rate of 1.1 s-1.

Movie 15

reveals impressive elastic breakup after a step shear of 400 %.
