FETCHLAB™, or the Facility for Education & Testing of Canine Hearing & the Laboratory for Animal Bioacoustics, is a community of clinicians, researchers and students that have an interest in the evaluation and management of canine hearing disorders and the study of hearing and vocalizations among animals. Currently, FETCHLAB™ has three active clinics: The University of Cincinnati (Founder), The University of Northern Colorado, and The University of Akron. FETCHLAB™ Akron opened in 2016, currently directed by Dr. Kristine Sonstrom Malowski (pictured center above).
Dr. Sonstrom Malowski completed her B.S. and M.S. in Animal Science at the University of Connecticut in 2007, followed by a dual Doctorate in Clinical Audiology (Au.D.) and Philosophy (Ph.D.) from the University of Cincinnati in 2015. The focus of her doctoral work was The Establishment of Baseline Normative Brainstem Auditory Evoked Responses (BAER) in Puppies and Special Operations Multi-Purpose Canines / Military Working Dogs. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Akron / Northeastern Ohio Audiology Consortium, Board Certified and Licensed Clinical Audiologist (Au.D.), and holds a Certificate in Animal Audiology from the University of Cincinnati FETCHLAB™.
Services provided at FETCHLAB™ Akron include:
- Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) Hearing Screenings. BAER screenings are performed consistent with the standards and protocols recommended by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (https://www.ofa.org/diseases/other-diseases/congenital-deafness).
- BAER Diagnostic Testing (Identifies degree of hearing loss)
- Recommendations regarding the management and support of dogs with hearing loss is provided for dog owners and breeders
