FETCHLAB, or the Facility for Education & Testing of Canine Hearing & the Laboratory for Animal Bioacoustics, is a community of clinicians, researchers and students that have an interest in the evaluation and management of canine hearing disorders and the study of hearing and vocalizations among animals. Currently, FETCHLAB has three active clinics: The University of Cincinnati (Founder), The University of Northern Colorado, and The University of Akron.  

FETCHLAB Akron opened in 2016, was directed by Dr. Kristine Sonstrom Malowski (pictured center above) from 2016-2022. The current clinician working to continue the direction and work of the FETCHLAB™ Akron is Dr. Paige Wulliger as of January 2023.

Services provided at FETCHLAB™ Akron include:

  • Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BAER) Hearing Screenings. BAER screenings are performed consistent with the standards and protocols recommended by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (https://www.ofa.org/diseases/other-diseases/congenital-deafness). 
  • BAER Diagnostic Testing (Identifies degree of hearing loss)
  • Recommendations regarding the management and support of dogs with hearing loss is provided for dog owners and breeders
