Here's list of events to honor and serve service members

The University of Akron will honor service members past and present during events the week of Nov. 7-11.

flag-verticalJOB FAIR -- A Community and Veterans Job Fair will be held on Monday, Nov. 7 at Quaker Station, 130 E. Mill St., in AkronThe first hour, between 10 and 11 a.m., is open to veterans only. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., the job fair is open to the public. Over 70 area employers are looking to hire on the spot with on-site interviews (professional interview attire, please). Parking and admission are free. Details.

TOWN HALL -- On Tuesday, Nov.  9, all student veterans are invited to participate in a Veterans Town Hall from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Student Union Room 310. It is an opportunity to meet with the Veterans Steering Committee and voice opinions, concerns and ideas for the future. Refreshments will be provided.

LUNCHEON -- Wayne College in Orrville invites area veterans to their third annual Veterans Day luncheon and recognition ceremony on Thursday, Nov.  10 in the Student Life Building. The event is free for veterans and a family member, but seating is limited. Reserve a seat online or call 330-684-8973. Ohio Sen. Frank LaRose will speak. The military-style ceremony will include lunch, music and a time to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Representatives will also be on hand to share information about local resources available veterans and the educational benefits available to those who have served. Social time will be from 11 to 11:30 a.m. , with Stair Steps to Wellness providing complimentary chair massages to early arrivals. A ceremony and lunch will start promptly at 11:30 a.m.

BREAKFAST -- Back on UA’s Main Campus, an annual continental breakfast honoring veterans – open to all veterans on campus and in the community - begins at 8 a.m. Friday, Nov.  11, in the Student Union Ballroon. At 9 a.m., Lt. Col. (Ret.) Bradley P. Harvey, director of military/veteran student programs at UA, will speak.

CEREMONY -- Immediately following the breakfast at 10 a.m., a veterans wreath-laying ceremony will take place outside at Coleman Commons to honor our nation's veterans, with President Matthew Wilson to speak. There will be a wreath laid for each branch of the service, and a 21 Gun Salute in honor of all veterans.

CELEBRATION -- Also on Friday, Nov.  11, the observances continue at a celebration from 11:30 a.m.  to 3 p.m. in the Musson Veterans Lounge located at InfoCision Stadium, third floor. Veterans will be honored for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. Refreshments and door prizes will be provided; it is free and open to the public.

RESOURCE FAIR -- Additionally, on the third floor of InfoCision Stadium, a Veterans Resource Fair is open to all veterans, alumni and students. This is where campus and community resources will be available to provide specific information and assistance for military service members.

CHARITY BALL -- The week ends with a Military Charity Ball on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. at Quaker Station Ballroom, downtown Akron. Come have dinner and help raise money for “Wags4Warriors,” a local veteran charity that provides service dogs to veterans. Tickets will be available to everyone until Monday, Nov.  7 at 5 pm for $35. The Veterans Steering Committee, Military Services Center, UA Adult Focus, Student Life, UA Army ROTC, and Zips Programming Network are among the groups that helped with the planning of these events.
