Mechanical engineering students awarded STLE scholarships

03/08/2024

Miranda Boyd and Yahya Qureshi were recently awarded scholarships from the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE). Tribology is the science and engineering of understanding friction, lubrication and wear phenomena for interacting surfaces in relative motion.

Boyd was selected for the Jeanie S. McCoy Scholarship and will receive $5,000. The scholarship recognizes women pursuing an education in and future career in tribology. Selection of this honor is based on grade point average, a letter of recommendation from a faculty advisor or educator, and the quality of a submitted essay for publication in STLE’s magazine, Tribology & Lubrication Technology (TLT).

Boyd is a second-year mechanical engineering student from Medina, Ohio. She conducts research at the Akron Engineering Tribology Lab (AETL) and is a member of the Women in Engineering Program as well as the Honors Society at The University of Akron (UA).

I am honored to be awarded the Jeanie S. McCoy Scholarship," said Boyd. "This prestigious award not only acknowledges my dedication and passion for tribology but also symbolizes a significant milestone in my academic and professional journey."

Qureshi was selected for the E. Richard Booser Award and will receive $4,500. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage undergraduate students to pursue graduate degrees or a career in tribology by providing the opportunity for them to participate in tribology research.

Qureshi is a third-year mechanical engineering student from Solon, Ohio. He engages in both academic and extracurricular activities and is passionate about innovation. He contributes to groundbreaking research at AETL.

"Receiving this scholarship is more than just financial aid; it's an acknowledgment of my dedication to mechanical engineering and my aspirations," shared Qureshi.

Currently, he is on co-op at Bridgestone Americas gaining valuable insights into tires and the rubber industry. He is a member of STLE and the Muslim Student Association (MSA) where he helps promote unity and cultural exchange among peers from diverse backgrounds. He is an avid outdoor enthusiast and enjoys rock climbing and kayaking.

"Such recognition speaks well of The University of Akron and the quality of our students," said Dr. Christopher DellaCorte, director of AETL and Timken Endowed Professor of Mechanical Engineering.

Both awardees will travel to the 78th STLE Annual Meeting & Exhibition in Minneapolis, Minnesota in May to receive their awards.

Congratulations, Miranda and Yahya!
