Biography

Dr. Christopher Blaha is Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at The University of Akron. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in tuba performance from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Fritz Kaenzig, and his Bachelor of Music from The Ohio State University, where he studied with James Akins. His additional teachers include Craig Knox, Wes Jacobs, Marianne Ploger, Ron Bishop, and Gary Tirey.

Before joining the faculty at Akron, Dr. Blaha served as Assistant Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Appalachian State University from 2009 to 2014. His former students perform with United States military bands, teach in public schools, and pursue graduate study across the country.

Dr. Blaha currently serves as Principal Tuba of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. He has also performed with the Columbus ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, Canton Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Grant Park Music Festival, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and Columbus Symphony Orchestra. From 2004 to 2008, he was Principal Tuba of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and taught at Charleston Southern University and Armstrong Atlantic State University.

Dr. Blaha is a Buffet Crampon Performing Artist.
