ASPIRE Summer High School Experience Gives Students a Hands-On Introduction to Business Leadership

06/29/2026

More than a dozen high schools from across Northeast Ohio were represented at The University of Akron College of Business this summer as students participated in the weeklong ASPIRE Summer High School Experience held June 1–5, 2026.

Designed for high school students interested in business, leadership and entrepreneurship, the week provided participants with the opportunity to experience college life while tackling real-world business challenges through team-based simulations and projects.

Throughout the week, students were divided into companies and assumed executive leadership roles, making critical financial, operational and marketing decisions in a competitive business simulation. Teams collaborated daily with business mentors and company advisors, gaining firsthand insight into leadership, teamwork, strategic planning and decision-making.

“Not only did I gain valuable knowledge about business and entrepreneurship, areas I am now considering exploring further in the future, but I also had some of the most enjoyable experiences I have had in a long time thanks to the wonderful community that ASPIRE creates,” said high school participant, Madeline McMillin.

In addition to company meetings and simulation activities, students heard from industry professionals who shared their career journeys and advice for future business leaders. Featured speakers included Gavin Stephens of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Jimmy Farmer of the Akron RubberDucks, and Kevin Leffler, owner of Appalachian Outfitters.

Participants also explored campus through a scavenger hunt, enjoyed an afternoon of bowling at the Roo Lounge, and connected with one another through a cornhole tournament and other fun activities throughout the week. The week concluded with company presentations and a closing ceremony recognizing student achievements.

"ASPIRE is about experiencing business and building friendships,” said Dr. Erin Makarius, chair of the Department of Management, and co-director of the program.

“We intentionally balance learning with fun to create an experience students look forward to each day,” added Julianne Jones, director of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy, and co-director of ASPIRE.

ASPIRE participants left with a certificate of completion, enhanced leadership and communication skills, and a deeper understanding of business careers and college opportunities. Members of the winning teams were also awarded scholarships to attend The University of Akron.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of ASPIRE is seeing students discover new possibilities for their future,” said Dr. Terry Daugherty, dean of the College of Business. “Whether they arrived interested in marketing, finance, entrepreneurship or simply wanting to learn more about business, they left with a better understanding of how their talents and interests can translate into meaningful careers. We are proud to introduce students to the College of Business and help them envision themselves as future leaders."

The University of Akron College of Business will host the next ASPIRE Summer High School Experience June 21–25, 2027, continuing its commitment to inspiring the next generation of business leaders. To learn more information, click here.
