Class notes

William “Bill” J. MillerWilliam “Bill” J. Miller, BSBA ’48, and a 96-year old D-Day veteran, returned to Normandy, France in June to honor fellow soldiers’ sacrifices. Miller’s return was his fourth since the June 6, 1944 invasion, when he was a U.S. Army second lieutenant. Miller made the trip with a handful of family members.

 

Clyde H. Bolinger, BA ’54 and fellow Zip Phil Haberman, were teammates on the Akron tennis team as students. Now, 65 years later, they found themselves opponents at the National Senior Games in Albuquerque, N.M. After a hard-fought match, Haberman won and eventually placed fourth in the 85-89 age category. Bolinger captured a bronze medal.

 

Roseanne Foti, MA ’82, PhD ’84, was recently named a Fellow by the Association for Psychological Science. Fellow status is awarded to members making outstanding contributions to psychology through research, teaching, service or practice. Foti, an associate professor and chair of the Department of Psychology at Virginia Tech College of Science, focuses her research on leadership perceptions, including how leaders emerge in groups and teams and leader-follower relationships.

 

Lori A. Kefalos, BSEE ’87, is a lead automation engineer by day and an author by night. Kefalos recently authored a book, the second installment of a 3-part picture book series chronicling school life with a purple, slug-like bully, A. Blob. Through this amusing, rhymed story, Kefalos hopes to encourage children to find their own strong voices and stand up for what is right. Kefalos is passionate about creating children’s literature that helps begin early conversations about relationships and the effect words and actions have on others.

Miller-Dawson, BSIM ’81, MBA ’94, will be wrapping up her tenure with the city of Akron and joining Summit County as its director of finance and budget effective in September. An Akron native, Miller-Dawson started with the city in 1978 and has served in various roles in the recreation, service and finance departments.

 

 

Robert J. Riesbeck, BSA ’87, recently appointed executive vice president and chief financial offer at Pier 1 Imports, Inc. Riesbeck is responsible for financial operations and accounting, including financial reporting, planning and analysis, treasury, tax, procurement and investor relations. He has more than 25 years of executive experience in retail and consumer goods.

 

Linda S. Ruse, JD ’85, recently named director of risk management and insurance at the University of Mount Union. Ruse joined Mount Union with extensive experience as an insurance professional, following 32 years at Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company and serving as an adjunct faculty member at Kent State University.

 

William E. Scott, BSCE ’81, recently named senior advisor to the executive management team at Silver Management Group of Companies, a provider of regulatory cost basis and wealth management technology solutions. Scott assists with client engagements, advancing product and business development initiatives and sharing his extensive brokerage operations and tax expertise.

 

Tanya Sudia photoTanya Sudia, BSN ’82, will become the new dean of Augusta University College of Nursing effective January 1, 2020. Sudia was chosen after a national search and emerged because of her outstanding credentials and experience.

John G. Green photoJohn G. Green, MBA ’92, recently named president and chief executive officer at Iredell Health System in Statesville, NC. Green will prepare distinct plans according to potential circumstances in the future of healthcare. Green hopes to morph healthcare in the state to become more cost-effective, offering the most reasonable prices possible.

 

 

Ty W. Hurless, Jr. photoTy W. Hurless, Jr., BS ’91, and fellow alum, Gene “Geno” A. Stroia, BA ’91, formed the band, Damn Torpedoes, in 2009, a Tom Petty tribute act. The band performs approximately 70 Petty songs and performed through the northeast Ohio area during the summer.

 

Thomas R. Moore, Jr., BSME ’95, recently appointed president, Custom Molded Products (CMP), a global manufacturer of pool, spa and bath products in Georgia. Moore is also a member of the International Hot Tub Association (IHTA) Strategic Leadership Team, which oversees advocacy, research and promotion of the pool and spa industry’s hot water segment.

 

David K. Mulkey, MS ’98, joins Creative Polymer Solutions as vice president of product management based in Irondale, AL. Mulkey brings an extensive background in formulating polyurethane foam and coating systems, acrylic PSA, and polyurea chemistries. Mulkey will be  CPS’s focal point person for developing and managing its brand offering and product lineup.

 

Janice G. Murphy photoJanice G. Murphy, MSN ’91, recently named president,  CEO for St. Vincent Charity Medical Center. Murphy’s career, from roots in Catholic ministry to extensive nursing expertise to executive leadership at the Cleveland Clinic, suits this time as St. Vincent charts its future course. The center also has services in cardiovascular and emergency medicine, primary care, occupational and behavioral health and addiction medicine.

 

 

Anne M. Shriner photoAnne M. Shriner, BSMD ’92, recently named chief medical officer at Nash UNC Health Care. Shriner, a licensed obstetrics and gynecology professional with more than 20 years of private practice experience, currently serves as vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer for Wooster Community Hospital in Wooster. Nash UNC Health Care is a nonprofit hospital authority consisting of four licensed hospitals totaling 345 beds.

 

Kelly D. Washington, BSED ’92, recently named director of state and federal programs at Ashtabula Area City Schools. Washington provides oversight of state and federal grand funds and manages planning, delivery, assessment and ongoing operations improvement connected to federal/state funding.

 

Christopher “Chris” N. West photoChristopher “Chris” N. West, BSA ’97, recently named president, CEO of North Coast Community Homes, a Cleveland nonprofit providing homes for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and severe mental illness.

Jason D. Dodson photoJason D. Dodson, BA ’01, ’04, joining Roetzel & Andress, LPA and Roetzel Consulting Solutions. Dodson will be a member of the Public Law and Finance Practice Group in the Akron and Cleveland Offices, focusing on assisting both public and private-sector clients in economic development, finance, real estate, zoning and land use, government relations, public-private partnerships, and public law. Dodson will also serve as a director of Roetzel Consulting Solutions, providing strategic solutions where public and private sectors intersect.

 

Shelley A. Goodrich, BA ’05, JD ’09, recently named deputy director of finance for the City of Akron by Mayor Dan Horrigan. Goodrich has 13 years of legal and accounting experience as well as financial accounting, tax administration and case management expertise.

 

Michael J. Matasich, BA ’00, JD ’04, has joined McDonald Hopkins, LLC’s Cleveland office, in the firm’s litigation department. Matasich brings 15 years of business and commercial real estate litigation experience to the litigation team.

 

Nicole L. Mullet photoNicole L. Mullet, BAE ’02, MAE ’11, recently named one of the Notable Women in Nonprofits 2019 by Crain’s Cleveland Business. As the first executive director of ArtsNow, Mullet has built an organization supporting and enlivening the arts sector, pulling together a variety of stakeholders, providing value to artists advancing their work.

 

 

Phaniraj T. Nagaraj photoPhaniraj T. Nagaraj, MS ’03, recently named vice president at Sun Plastech, Inc., a subsidiary of Asahi Kasei Corp. Nagaraj leads SPI’s business in the Americas, focusing on delivering great customer experiences to companies purchasing their products.

 

Maria M. Rubinstein, BS ’08, recently received the 4th Annual Young Investigators Award by Gateway for Cancer Research. The $50,000 award (YIA) provides funding to promising investigators to encourage and promote quality research in clinical oncology. Rubinstein is a medical oncology fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Kelly E. Dine, MAED ’16, was one of only 16 umpires worldwide selected to umpire in the prestigious 2019 Little League Baseball World Series in South Williamsport, PA, this summer. The annual 10-day tournament features the winning teams from eight U.S. regions and eight international regions, all competing for a Little League World Series Champion title. Dine also worked her first NCAA Division 1 baseball game this past April and is believed to be the first female umpire to ever work an official NCAA D1 baseball game in the U.S.

 

Lloyd O. Henry, Jr., BS ’16, has joined the Siegfried Group, LLP (Siegfried) as a senior associate.

 

Matthew Khol photoMatthew Khol, BS ’15, was recently accepted into the drug systems biology Ph.D. program at Henan University in Kaifeng, China. Khol began his Chinese language and culture studies at UA’s Confucius Institute and through the institute he has been awarded the Henan Provincial Government scholarship, covering tuition, lodging and living expenses.

 

 

Arielle J. Lester photoArielle J. Lester, JD ’19, has joined the Cleveland office of McDonald Hopkins, LLC, as an associate in the business department, where she will be in the firm’s national Healthcare Practice Group.

 

 

Kimberly M. Rippeth, JD ’17, an attorney at Black McCuskey Souers & Arbaugh Law Firm, has graduated from Leadership Tuscarawas. The program develops passionate, visionary leaders to strengthen the community. Rippeth focuses her practice in the areas of estate planning, probate and trust administration, business law and real estate law.

 

Savanna L. Roberts photoSavanna L. Roberts, BSA ’13, recently recognized as one of Crain’s Cleveland Business Twenty in Their 20s. Roberts is currently Senior Analyst, Transaction Services at Bober Markey Fedorovich.

 

 

 

 

Anna S. Tombazzi photoAnna S. Tombazzi, BSChE ’18, recently crowned Miss Czech-Slovak US 2019-2020 National Queen this August. Tombazzi competed for the title during the Czech Days Weekend Festival held in Wilver, NE. The weekend draws more than 50,000 people and has been celebrated for the past 58 years. Single female contestants, between the ages of 16-26, have been competing for the National Queen title for the past 33 years.
