For University of Akron senior Lena Conzaman, transferring to Akron was an opportunity to return home, save money and continue pursuing her career goals — all while earning a quality education.
For University of Akron senior Lena Conzaman, transferring to Akron was an opportunity to return home, save money and continue pursuing her career goals — all while earning a quality education.
A marketing major from Copley, Ohio, Conzaman previously attended a private university out of state. Although she valued that experience, transferring to The University of Akron offered a better fit academically, financially and personally.
A smooth transition with the right support
Navigating a college transfer can feel overwhelming, but Conzaman said the support she received from her academic advisor, Jessica Toro, made the process seamless.
“My transfer experience was incredibly smooth!” she said. “My advisor, Jessica Toro, made the entire process so easy. She was intentional, caring and always willing to help. I felt supported every step of the way!”
That individualized support helped Conzaman transition to Akron with confidence and focus on what matters most: completing her degree and preparing for her career.
Learning beyond the classroom
As a senior in the College of Business, Conzaman has valued opportunities to apply what she learns in class to real-world situations.
“I love the hands-on learning opportunities, especially within the marketing program,” she said. “I've gained so much practical experience through my classes, and the career fairs and networking opportunities have helped prepare me for my future career."
Beyond campus, Conzaman works as a donor development and marketing coordinator at a local nonprofit and volunteers during the week through her young adult ministry. She credits the flexibility of attending Akron with allowing her to balance her education with professional responsibilities and community involvement.
Advice for future transfer students
For students considering a transfer, Conzaman encourages looking beyond the immediate transition and focusing on how a school can support long-term goals.
“My biggest advice is to choose a school that sets you up best for your future,” she said. “For me, transferring to UA meant making a smarter financial decision while also exploring career opportunities. Don't be afraid to make a change if it helps you reach your goals!”
Conzaman's experience demonstrates how the right academic support, hands-on learning and career preparation can help transfer students find their fit at Akron.
