On Thursday, Aug. 27, students, faculty and staff in The University of Akron School of Performing Arts gathered in the Guzzetta Recital Hall for its annual Fall Convocation. Attendees celebrated student achievements, enjoyed inspiring faculty performances and strengthened their sense of community as Guzzetta Hall marked its 50th anniversary.

A new chapter for performing arts at UA

This year is also the inaugural year as the School of Performing Arts, following the merger of the former School of Music and the School of Dance, Theatre and Arts Administration. This transformation is more than just an administrative shift — it represents a growing spirit of collaboration and camaraderie. Artistically, the school is embracing new possibilities, while academically developing innovative curricula that not only keep it competitive but also help shape the future of performing arts in the region.

Notably, the school celebrated both new faculty members and established faculty who have taken on new roles. Please join the school in congratulating Assistant Professor of Instruction Matt Dudack (percussion), Assistant Professor of Practice Dr. Justin Evangelist (saxophone), Assistant Professor of Practice Dr. T.J. Harper (choir), Assistant Lecturer Jenny Robinson (flute) and Visiting Assistant Professor Rachel Palermo (dance) as they step into their expanded positions within the school.

50 years of performing arts in Guzzetta Hall

After 50 years in Guzzetta Hall and countless changes, one thing remains constant: an unwavering dedication to the performing arts for all. The school warmly invites the entire University of Akron community to share in the excitement. Throughout the year, it will offer free concerts and master classes, and provide music and dance education through both the School of Performing Arts and the Arts Academy, managed by Sarah Bailey.
