UA’s Risk Management and Insurance Program Earns National Recognition

08/31/2026

University of Akron College of Business Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) faculty and students recently received national recognition during two industry events highlighting the strength and impact of the college’s Risk Management & Insurance (RMI) program.

Latoria Hamilton, associate professor of practice for finance, attended the Ohio Insurance Institute’s Insuring Ohio Futures (IOF) Industry Sector Partnership Meeting, bringing together workforce and industry leaders from across Ohio to discuss the future of the insurance workforce.

Following the IOF meeting, Hamilton attended the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) opening sessions, which brought together chief insurance regulators from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and U.S. territories.

A highlight of the experience came when Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Ohio Department of Insurance Director Judith French recognized the University’s RMI program and its students during DeWine's remarks to commissioners and attendees about the vital role the insurance industry plays in the state’s economy. DeWine asked the UA students to stand as representatives of higher education insurance programs across the state.

“It was an incredibly proud moment and wonderful recognition for our program on a national stage,” Hamilton said.

Among the students represented was Aareyan Lewis, an RMI student and co-president of the university’s Gamma Iota Sigma (GIS) chapter. Lewis’ involvement reflects the opportunities RMI students have to connect their classroom experiences with industry leaders and professionals shaping the future of insurance.

Through industry partnerships, professional development and hands-on opportunities, the RMI program continues to prepare students for careers in the evolving risk management and insurance field.
