Graduation and Commencement

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation!  As you prepare for your final semesters at The University of Akron, please review the step-by-step information provided here for important details regarding graduation and commencement.

All communication regarding your degree progress and commencement activities will be sent to your UA e-mail account.

All financial obligations to The University of Akron must be reconciled prior to degree candidacy (i.e., commencement program notation, ceremony attendance and degree conferral).

Since there is no Summer commencement ceremony, Summer degree candidates have the option of attending either the Spring or Fall commencement ceremony in the same calendar year. Please note that your degree will be conferred at the end of the Summer semester regardless of the ceremony you choose to attend.

Based on your current academic record, My DPR will display your academic requirements including what requirements have been fulfilled and what needs to be satisfied in order to complete your degree.  Please see your academic advisor if you have questions regarding the course requirements shown in My DPR.

In your Student Center in My Akron, review the information under the Finances section to ensure that you do not have any due charges.  Also review the Holds section to the right of your Student Center to ensure that you do not have any Library, Parking, or Accounts Receivable holds.

All Summer 2019 graduates and Fall 2019 graduate and undergraduate degree candidates choosing to attend commencement will be recognized in one of the two commencement ceremonies being held on Saturday, December 14, 2019.

Review the Fall 2019 Commencement Information to see which time your college’s ceremony will be held as well as guest ticket distribution dates and times.

The commencement ceremony in which you participate depends upon the academic college from which you expect to earn your degree.  If you are earning multiple degrees, you are required to march with the highest degree and may only march once.

Check-in begins one hour prior to the start of the ceremony. Students who arrive between 9:45am - 9:55am (morning ceremony) or 1:45pm - 1:55pm (afternoon ceremony) will be placed at the end of the processional. Students who arrive after 9:55am (morning ceremony) or 1:55pm (afternoon ceremony) will not be permitted to participate.

Ceremony Guest Information, which includes helpful information such as parking and seating, should be shared with family and friends.  Ceremonies are expected to last between 1½ - 2 hours.

Law students should review the deadlines and details information for the School of Law commencement ceremony.

The link to RSVP will be available beginning Monday, July 29, 2019.

All Summer 2019 graduates and Fall 2019 graduate and undergraduate degree candidates must submit a commencement ceremony RSVP no later than Sunday, December 1, 2019.  If you do not RSVP, it will be assumed that you do NOT plan to attend your commencement ceremony and guest tickets will NOT be reserved for you.

All degree candidates attending the commencement ceremony must wear proper graduation regalia.  Caps and gowns are available for purchase online as well as at the Barnes & Noble Bookstore in the Student Union and in the Polsky Building.

Professional DVDs of your commencement ceremony may be ordered online

Want to proudly display your diploma from The University of Akron?  Diploma frames may be ordered online

Professional photographers from GradImagesTM take photographs of each degree candidate prior to the ceremony processional and while crossing the stage.

A final audit of your academic record and student financial account will be conducted beginning one week after your graduating semester and can take up to four weeks following your graduation date.

After all degree requirements have been verified as successfully completed and all financial obligations have been verified as reconciled, your degree will be posted and your diploma will be mailed to your DIPLOMA address.  If we do not have a diploma address for you at the time of mailing, your diploma will be mailed to your HOME address.
