Deborah Cook was appointed to a term beginning July 2, 2025.
Cook earned both a Bachelor of Arts in 1974, a Juris Doctor degree in 1978 and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Law degree from the University in 1996. She received a University of Akron Alumni Honor Award in 1997. She was president of UA’s senior class of 1974 as an undergraduate. Cook has served as a U.S. Circuit Court judge since 2003, gaining senior status on Sept. 30, 2021. President George W. Bush nominated her to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. Prior to her appointment to the Sixth Circuit, she served for more than a decade as an Ohio Supreme Court justice and for several years before that as an Ohio appeals court judge.
