Salvatore Diecidue, AAS ’84, BSMT ‘85, has been promoted to Director of Project Management by The Martin Group (TMG), a New Jersey-based general contractor and construction manager.  Salvatore served for the past eight years as a project executive and mechanical subject matter expert for several of TMG’s key clients such as New York Life and Verizon.

 

Jeannie L. Fleming-Gifford, AAB ’84, named executive director at Fairmount Center for the Arts. Fleming-Gifford, with more than 20 years arts management experience, most recently served as the director of education at The Fine Arts Association in Willoughby, Ohio.  She has also worked with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.

 

Thomas J. Freeman, JD ’82, Summit County Juvenile Court Magistrate has been elected to serve as president of the Ohio Association of Magistrates (OAM) for the upcoming year.

Rowlands, JD ’89, has been selected to serve on the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) panel “County Justice/City Justice: Perspectives of Women Judges.”  The panel discussion was part of CSW’s 62nd Session annual meeting being held at the United Nations headquarters in New York City.

 

Walter J. Sokira, BA ’87, SVP and Wealth Advisor, leads the new Hilliard Lyons branch opening in Akron.  He previously worked at UBS and had his own firm as an Investment Advisor.

Berryl A. Anderson, JD ’91, named Chief Magistrate Judge of the DeKalb County  (Ga.,) Magistrate Court.  Anderson was previously an attorney with the Atlanta Legal Aid Society.

 

Tracey M. Arnone, MAE ’90, selected as Assistant Superintendent of Schools for the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, Office of Catechetical Formation and Education.  Arnone was previously principal at St. Hilary School.

 

John M. Baldwin, Jr., PhD ’92, elected to the board of directors of the Tire Industry Association (TIA).  Baldwin is the chief product and technical strategist for Discount Tire, and is recognized internationally for his research on tire aging, tire test development, and tire service life prediction.

 

Judith E. Barnes-Lancaster, JD ’94, was honored by Women’s Impact, an organization she helped start. Barnes-Lancaster, now 78, is an attorney who provides special counsel to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office. She and other professional women founded Women’s Impact to help more women hold prominent leadership positions and realize their full potential.

 

Gary B. Bernstein, MSME ’93, has been promoted to VP, CMO at Commonwealth Associates Inc.

 

Lisa A. Blough, MA ’98, recently became the first female superintendent for Coventry Schools. Blough has watched the district grow and change as she recently completed her 23rd year with the district.

 

Wendy Bolas, AAB ’91, served a term as interim president of Leadership Akron.  Bolas is a graduate of Leadership Akron class of 2004 and has volunteered for the organization, most recently serving as the vice president of its Alumni Association.

 

Trent J. Burner, BA ’95, MA ’97, joins Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), a distinguished global HR society. Burner leads the society’s research function, housing  285,000 members in more than 160 countries with more than 575 chapters located in the U.S., China, India and United Arab Emirates among others.

 

Ron L. Cable, BA ’96, JD ’00, elected to Akron Municipal Court bench in 2017.  Cable was a magistrate for 16 years in Summit County Domestic Relations Court and one year in Juvenile Court.  He also has worked as an attorney and resident supervisor for Oriana House Inc.

 

Michelle A. Carano, BS ’97,  hired by Bober Markey Fedorovich, a top 20 regional CPA and advisory firm. Carano is a senior manager in the Assurance and Advisory Services department with nearly 20 years of public accounting experience.

 

Keith A. Cline, BSA ’92, MBA ’02, was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of CorePoint Lodging Inc. by the Board of Directors of La Quinta Holdings Inc. Prior to joining La Quinta, Cline has served in a variety of executive and senior leadership roles at Charming Charlie, Inc., Express, Inc. and The J.M. Smucker Company.

 

Neal B. Colby, BSBA ’91, promoted to Senior VP and CFO at CM Wealth Advisors.  Colby joined the firm in 2014 as Director of Operations.

 

Rebecca A. Corrigan, MPA ’97, hired as Olmsted Township’s first administrator.  Corrigan comes to the township after holding other economic development-related posts and serving in the U.S. Naval Reserves and the Ohio Army National Guard.

 

Brandi M. Davis, BAE ’99, MAE ’03, has been named principal of I PROMISE School by the Akron School Board.  The school was created through a partnership between Akron Public Schools and the LeBron James Family Foundation.

 

Talisa L. Dixon, MA ’93, MAE ’98, PhD ’03, named superintendent of Columbus City Schools, Ohio’s largest school district.  Dixon was previously superintendent of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City Schools in suburban Cleveland.

 

Scott D. Hill, BS ’94, appointed Chief Financial Officer at MobileIron.

 

Patricia A. Hubbard, PhD ’96, appointed Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Cabot Corporation.  Hubbard will be responsible for Cabot’s global technology and research and development function.

 

Kimberly J. Huffman, BAE ’94, named 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient by The University of Akron Wayne College Alumni Association.  The award recognizes graduates who have shown leadership in the workplace and community.

 

Sean M. Joyce, BSA ’94, new president and executive director of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in Akron.  Joyce was previously the estate’s CFO and VP of operations and had served as interim president and executive director since 2017.

 

John P. Laczko, JD ’90, named Portage County’s new chief public defender. Appointed unanimously by the county’s Public Defender Commission, Laczko is a veteran criminal defense lawyer and had been an assistant public defender since 2000.

 

Margaret A. Lewis, BSME ’93, named Senior Vice President Manufacturing & Facilities for New Flyer Industries, the largest transit bus and motor coach manufacturer in North America.

 

William S. Niaura, BS ’91, MS ’93, named Bridgestone Americas’ director of new business development.  Niaura works at the Bridgestone guayule research center in Mesa, AZ.

 

Sharon Rae North, MA ’94, jazz vocalist, recently released “Sincerely Yours,” an album described as epic satisfaction. North, a Youngstown native, is formerly a reporter for WYTV-TV Channel 33.

 

Ted S. Rusinoff, BSBA ’95, MT ’00, named 53rd president of The MDRT Foundation, the charitable arm of the Illinois-based Million Dollar Round Table trade association.

 

John M. Sankovic, BSME ’90, MSME ’91, appointed president and CEO of the Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI).

 

Sanjiv M. Sansgiri, MS ’91, PhD ’01, professor and head of the mechanical engineering department at the Army Institute of Technology (AIT), received the award of “best professor in mechanical engineering” at the Dewang Mehta National Education Awards recently.

 

Betty S. Sutton, JD ’90, former U.S. Representative, ended her campaign for Ohio governor and joined the Democratic ticket becoming Richard Cordray’s running mate.

 

Lynne M. Tracy, JD ’94, nominated by U.S. President Trump as the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Armenia.  Tracy is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, currently serving as Senior Advisor for Russia Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.

 

Christy L. Ellis-Trolian, BA ’93, MA ’95, JD ’05, is the founding director of The Ashland University Center for Addictions.  The Center for Addictions will be housed in the Department of Psychology on campus.

 

Patricia A. Wagner, BA ’95, was named by the Sikich Company as a director in the firm’s human resources consulting practice.  Wagner has more than 20 years of experience advising companies across industries including Fortune 50 firms.  Prior to joining Sikich, Wagner served as HR director for GE, Amazon, Cisco and the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.

 

Nicole A. Walker, BA ’98, JD ’06, now serves as a judge on the Akron Municipal Court. Walker has previously been a magistrate and judicial attorney for Summit County Probate Court Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer. Walker also was a prosecuting attorney for Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh’s felony division as well as a private attorney.

Jennifer P. Bott, MA ’01, PhD ’04, named provost and vice president for academic affairs at Western Michigan University.  Bott has been business dean at Ball State University for the past three years.

 

Michael W. Considine, MA ’05, founder and president of NORKA Food and Beverage is reviving the handcrafted sparkling beverage line.

 

Anne-Marie Cunningham, BA ’01, had a new artwork exhibition at Studio TWOZEROTWO in Walla Walla, WA.  She currently owns and operates studioArticolore and is assistant professor at Blue Mountain Community College.

 

Michael K. Danks, AAS ’05, BS ’08, named site superintendent for the construction of the Tallmadge City Schools’ new buildings and athletic facilities.

 

Seth A. Faith, BS ’01, a nationally known forensic genomics scientist, has been hired by Battelle to provide technical leadership and expertise to applied genomics research.  Faith most recently worked as an assistant professor at North Carolina State University’s Department of Molecular Biomedical Sciences at the Forensic Science Institute.

 

Brooke Leach Grable, BSE ’04, MAE ’09, named among 140 Americans selected by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for the 2017-18 English Language Fellow Program. Grable, a Nordonia Hills teacher is currently overseas, training English teachers at Kosova English Teachers Network in Pristina, Kosovo.

 

Cody Grimm, BSBA ’07, US Army Major, returned to his Woodridge High School alma mater, discussing with scholar-athletes the traits he needed to complete the Army’s Ranger School, considered by many to be the premiere military leadership course in the world.  Grimm is a member of the famed 101st Airborne Division, Ranger Qualified and was awarded a Combat Infantry Badge (CIB) for actions in Afghanistan.  The CIB is awarded to soldiers who actively engage an enemy in ground combat.

 

Betsy L. Hartschuh, JD ’04, Akron Children’s Museum co-founder, received Leadership Akron’s Distinguished Leader Award.  The award honors a Leadership Akron graduate  making significant community impact  via a specific cause or issue.  Akron Children’s Museum is a permanent fixture at Lock 3 Park.

 

Jason D. Holbrook, MBA ’03, JD ’03, has joined The Rogers Towers law firm as a shareholder in its Jacksonville, Fla., office.  Holbrook focuses on civil litigation, including wrongful death and premises liability cases.

 

Cheryl M. Kirkbride, JD ’01, elected to the CSB Bancorp Board of Directors.  Kirkbride is a principal in the Kropf Wagner Law Firm, in Orrville, Ohio, and also serves as Orrville’s law director.

 

Wayne D. Lewis, MA ’02, named interim education commissioner by the Kentucky Board of Education. Lewis is a charter schools advocate and former public school teacher who has previously served as a non-voting adviser to the Kentucky Board of Education.

 

Delano R. Massey, BA ’02, named a top manager in the US Central region for The Associated Press.  Massey joined The AP in 2016 as the Ohio news editor and has helped lead AP’s nationwide Race and Ethnicity reporting team.

 

Shani S. Richards, BA ’06, awarded $10,000 from the League of Creative Interventionists, with support from the Knight Foundation, to re-imagine her Akron neighborhood.  Richards learned metalsmithing while at Akron and plans to empower youth through her Crafting Food Outside the Lunch Box project, reinforcing the message of health and nutrition through food.

 

Monica A. Richards-Preston, BM ’04, led the first band in this summer’s Pro Football Hall of Fame Grand Parade.  Staff Sgt. Richards-Preston was the drum major leading the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band from Cherry Point, N.C.  Richards-Preston is a magna cum laude graduate of UA, and a 13-year U.S. Marine veteran and sharpshooter.

 

Maria S. Rodgers, BSE ’02, MSE ’11, received a Milken Educator Award.  Rodgers is a math teacher at Milkovich Middle School in Maple Heights. The award was part of the Milken Family Foundation’s national tour, surprising outstanding educators with the Milken Educator Award.

 

John M. Rossi, JD ’05, is now the Counsel and VP at Farmers Trust Company.

 

Anthony J. Scolaro, AAB ’06, BS ’13, a co-owner of 111 Bistro with Meghan L. Pender, plan to open Trio in the Bac Asian space in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood.

 

Margo M. Sommerville, MPA ’04, is the first African-American woman to lead Akron City Council as president.

 

Harry R. Stark, MPA ’00, appointed as the new permanent service director of Aurora, Ohio. Stark previously was assistant director of public service in Wadsworth.

 

Hilary E. Stewart, BS ’07, MA ’08, named president of Akron-based Torchbearers for 2018, after previously serving on the board and as VP.

 

Jennie G. Tinney, MBA ’04, a materials manager at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.’s race tire manufacturing plant in Akron the past four years, has been recognized at the sixth annual Women in Manufacturing Science, Technology, Engineering and Production (STEP) Ahead Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.

 

Jennifer L. Tumlin, BA ’06, participated in Miami University’s Earth Expeditions global field course in Mongolia this past summer.  Tumlin studied the ecology of steppe ecosystems with a focus on the Passas’ cat, Przewalski’s horse and participatory conservation media.

 

Jessica M. Vavra, BS ’09, selected to complete fellowship training specializing in reconstruction and plastic surgery at the University of Louisville. Currently, Vavra serves as a chief resident physician, completing her five-year residency program in general surgery at St. John Hospital & Medical Center in Detroit.

 

Lisa N. Williams, BS ’00, MA ’02, recently served as Cuyahoga Community College’s interim president while the institution conducted a search for a new president. Williams is Tri-C’s vice president of learning and engagement and joined the college in 2002.

Reuben A. Auck, BS ’12, is director for The Well’s 60 for 60 campaign which works to strengthen the housing market in Akron’s Middlebury neighborhood. The organization focuses on housing stock reinvestment and bringing jobs and a neighborhood identity back to the area.

 

EbaNee N. Bond, BSME ’18, named new program coordinator at Akron’s Bounce Innovation Hub. Bond assists with program implementation, community-based programs and Bounce and partner events.

 

Theron E. Brown, BM ’13, actor, educator and co-founder of the Rubber City Jazz and Blues Festival in Akron. Brown has played on stage with a number of jazz greats, including Joe Lovano, Ken Peplowski and Warren Wolf.

 

Kirsten J. Buccigrossi, BA ’10, named director, marketing and communications for the Great Lakes Group.  Buccigrossi has more than 12 years of operations, logistics and marketing experience in the maritime industry both afloat and ashore.

 

Kathleen A. Burns, MSN ’11, recognized by The American Health Council as “America’s Best Nurse” for her outstanding contributions to the nursing field.  Burns is the Senior Director of Nursing Education for the Cleveland Clinic.

 

Brandon T. Carroll, BS ’14, will lead the new Charleston, S.C., practice for Corrective Chiropractic, headquartered in Atlanta, and expanding to South Carolina.

 

Eric Foster, JD ’13, named as a visiting member of the editorial board of cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer.  Foster is an attorney in private practice specializing in criminal defense, entertainment law, personal injury and landlord/tenant law.

 

Brian Fritz, MS ’11, received a Leadership in History Award from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH).  Fritz was recognized for his book Shade Furnace: An Early 19th Century Ironmaking Community in Somerset County, Pennsylvania at the annual AASLH meeting in Austin, Texas.

 

Gabrielle Gromofsky, BS ’17, while still a student, won the John F. Hall Senior Award from the Northern Ohio Geological Society for being the outstanding graduating geology student in northern Ohio.

 

Stephanie A. Ham, PhD, ’17, is cofounder and CEO of OncoSolutions, an Akron-based company that grows 3D models of tumors and uses them to test possible cancer treatments from pharmaceutical companies.

 

Bor-Kai Hsiung, PhD, ’17, is part of a team of biologists, physicists and engineers researching how the peacock spider produces iridescent rainbows on their thoraxes.  The research appears in the journal Nature Communications.

 

Julie A. Jakmides, JD, ’17, recently wed Edmond Mack, a Canton, Ohio, Ward 8 councilman. Jakmides is also listed in “Twenty under 40” for Stark County.

 

Lia Jones, JD ’12, is a recipient of the 2018 Greater Akron Chamber “30 for the Future” award.  Jones joined UA in 2012 and is credited with leading the culmination of the $21 million capital campaign to renovate the McDowell Law Center.  Jones is a board member for both Torchbearers Akron and The Battered Women’s Shelter.

 

Cory D. Katzenmeyer, BS ’16, has been added to the staff of the International Soap Box Derby as operations coordinator.  Katzenmeyer will be responsible for overseeing the inventory component of parts and kits.

 

Eric C. Olson, BA ’14, will direct UA students as they design and install interpretive panels at the Portage Path.  They are working with the Portage Path Collaborative to excite Akron area residents about its Native American past.

 

Meghan L. Pender, AA ’10, a co-owner of 111 Bistro with Anthony Scolaro, plan to open Trio in the Bac Asian space in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood.  Pender and Scolaro are looking forward to an adventurous approach in the kitchen in Tremont.

 

Marcus V. Phelps, BA ’11, has been hired by the Cincinnati law firm of Keating Muething & Klekamp PLL as an associate.  Phelps practices in the firm’s Real Estate Group.

 

Julia G. Radefeld, JD ’18, has been hired by the Canton, Ohio, law firm of Black McCuskey Souers & Arbaugh.  Radefeld’s focus is intellectual property, business law and commercial transactions.

 

Andrea Rocchio, MS ’17, now serves as the Science Educator at the Mariners’ Museum and Park in Newport News, Va.

 

Freddie R. Seitz, BS, ’17, recently gave a presentation at the Poland Library regarding his family’s experiences concerning his facial differences. Rose Seitz, Freddie’s mother, joined him and talked about her son’s birth and  accomplishments and setbacks during his lifetime. Freddie, who communicates through sign language, talked about the importance of kindness as his mother interpreted for the audience. Freddie and his mother do similar presentations like this throughout the community.

 

Kenneth W. Smith, BS ’15, a NASA Langley Researcher, is featured as part of this year’s Forbes’ “30 Under 30” for Science.  Smith, a Streetsboro, Ohio, native, earned his bachelor’s degree in aerospace at UA. While a student, he co-founded the Akronauts Rocket Design Team to advance STEM outreach and aerospace technology.

 

Lisa M. Teeple, BFA ’15, is the 2017 Canton Arts District All-Star winner.  Her acrylic painting “Sublimation of Neptune” earned top vote honors at the Canton Museum of Art event in 2017.

 

Da’Shika Wells, AA ’16, started Official B.A.B.E. Magazine, answering a need to lend support to female African-American entrepreneurs like herself.  B.A.B.E. stands for Black and Brilliant Entrepreneur.  The Official B.A.B.E. Magazine features articles and advice from contributors nationwide.

 

Jacob T. Will, JD ’10, has been appointed to the Stark County Law Library Resources Board.  The library provides legal information services to local judges, attorneys, county and township officials and citizens.
