The University of Akron (UA) has announced a statewide push to ensure college affordability for Ohio families through the expansion and promotion of the Making Akron Possible (MAP) Grant.

The program provides a direct pathway to a tuition-free college education for eligible, high-need prospective undergraduate students. Beginning in the upcoming academic year, the MAP Grant will cover 100% of remaining tuition and general fee costs for qualifying Ohio residents, ensuring that financial barriers do not stand between hardworking students and a high-quality degree.

The statewide emphasis reflects UA’s commitment to driving social mobility, keeping top talent in Ohio and delivering on its promise of accessible, career-ready education.

"This initiative is transformational for students and families across our state," said David Peterson, vice president for enrollment management. "For too many bright students, the fear of the cost of college creates a barrier before they even apply. Through the Making Akron Possible Grant, we are sending a clear, unequivocal message to every community in Ohio: A University of Akron education can be within your reach."

Connecting access to opportunity

The MAP Grant builds on UA’s strong reputation for hands-on, experiential learning, co-op programs and industry partnerships. By removing financial stress, the initiative allows students to focus on their academic and professional development, preparing them to seamlessly transition into high-demand careers in engineering, healthcare, business, technology and the arts.

"The University of Akron proudly leads the way in affordability," said President R.J. Nemer. "Our unique Making Akron Possible Grant breaks down educational barriers, creates pathways for accessibility and now expands to all of Ohio's residents. We're excited to open our doors to families who may have previously thought a world-class education was out of reach."

How the Making Akron Possible Grant works

The Making Akron Possible Grant is structured as a "last-dollar" financial aid award.

Eligibility: Open to incoming, first-time undergraduate students who are Ohio residents, are Pell Grant eligible and have a family adjusted gross income (AGI) of $85,000 or less based on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Coverage: The grant covers any remaining tuition and mandatory general fees after federal grants (such as the Pell Grant) and state aid (such as the Ohio College Opportunity Grant) are applied.

Duration: Renewable for up to four years for students maintaining academic eligibility.

How to apply

Prospective students interested in utilizing the Making Akron Possible Grant for the upcoming fall semester must complete their admission application to The University of Akron and submit their FAFSA listing UA’s school code (003123).
