Overview

The Associate Degree in Nursing at The University of Akron’s Wayne College gives you a direct path to becoming a registered nurse in 2.5 years, with small classes and hands-on clinical experience beginning in your first year. After completing the program, you’ll be prepared to sit for the NCLEX-RN licensure exam.

And your ADN can take you further. After becoming an RN, you can continue building your skills and career through Akron’s RN to BSN program, designed for working nurses and requiring a minimum of 30 additional credits.

Admission starts with five prerequisite courses, a 2.5 GPA and a minimum grade of C in each course. From there, you’ll complete a progression checklist that includes a CNA route or testing route, background check, drug screening, TB test and BLS certification.

Admissions Requirements

Prerequisite courses (2.5 GPA, C minimum)

  • Human Anatomy & Physiology I with laboratory (BIOL:200/201 or ANAT:206/210), 4 credits

  • English Composition I (ENGL:111), 3 credits

  • Introduction to Psychology (PSYC:100), 3 credits

  • Introduction to Sociology (SOCIO:100), 3 credits

Progression checklist, in order

  1. Meet the patient care requirement: current CNA certification, an STNA skills evaluation, the UA ADN Skill Boot Camp, or an approved patient care assistant course.

  2. Meet the testing requirement: HESI 75% on Reading and Math, or ACT 22 / SAT 1030 with a 2.75 GPA on previous coursework.

  3. Pass the background check and urine drug screening.

  4. Complete the TB test.

  5. Hold current BLS Certification for the Health Care Provider (American Heart Association).

Transfer students who have been dismissed or failed a clinical nursing course from another Associate Degree Nursing program at another institution are not eligible to apply as a transfer student to the UA nursing program within 3 years of dismissal or failure of a clinical course.

Students who have been dismissed or failed a BSN-level clinical course are eligible to apply to the ADN.

International students in F-1 status outside the USA cannot enroll in the ADN; inside the USA, contact the International Center before applying. If the ADN is closed to you for visa reasons, the four-year BSN may be an eligible route.
