Overview
The Certificate in Surveying for Civil Engineers is designed to help civil engineers and civil engineering students meet the academic requirements of Ohio Revised Code 4733.11 for Professional Surveyor licensure. The program provides the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the surveying profession.
Professional surveyors play a key role in land development and ensure the accuracy of land divisions and property boundaries. This program also supports the State’s goal to expand the number of qualified candidates for county engineer positions, which require dual registration as both a professional engineer and professional surveyor.

Students who meet The University of Akron’s admission requirements and choose engineering as their major are directly admitted into the College

Admission to this certificate program is open to both current University of Akron civil engineering students and graduates of ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science programs in civil engineering. Current students are required to pursue the certificate concurrently with or following the completion of their BS in Civil Engineering.
This 17 credit program meets the academic requirements of Ohio Revised Code 4733.11 - Professional Surveyor License Qualifications. All courses taken may be applied to the AAS in Land Surveying and/or the BS in Surveying and Mapping.
Career Outcomes
Earning a Certificate in Surveying for Civil Engineers provides civil engineers and civil engineering students with the academic foundation required to pursue licensure as a Professional Surveyor in Ohio and many other states. This credential opens the door to expanded career opportunities, including eligibility for dual licensure as both a Professional Engineer (PE) and Professional Surveyor (PS). Dual licensure is especially valuable for those interested in leadership positions, such as serving as a County Engineer.
