Welcome to the Department of Finance at The University of Akron. We are proud to offer two dynamic undergraduate programs in Financial Management and Financial Planning designed to prepare students for success in today’s evolving financial landscape.
Our Financial Management program equips students with the analytical, technical, and strategic skills needed for careers in corporate finance, investments, banking, and financial analysis. Our Financial Planning program prepares students to guide individuals and families in achieving their financial goals, with a curriculum aligned to industry standards and professional certification pathways.
Across both programs, our curriculum challenges students to pursue excellence through hands-on learning, real-world applications, and engagement with industry professionals. Our graduates are technologically proficient, strong communicators, and well-prepared to navigate the complexities of modern financial decision-making.

A degree in Financial Management or Financial Planning offers many career opportunities in managing financial operations for a firm, investments, and individual wealth management and includes the following:

The Corbin Finance Lab is a unique educational facility for finance faculty to both teach and video/record their in-class lectures using five student stations and seven simultaneous screens that are interconnected through a central control panel.
Active associations and fraternities that provide opportunities to interact with students from diverse backgrounds, network with business professionals, participate in competitions and organize community service projects.
Several areas of study provide the educational foundation needed to pursue professional licensure and designation examinations:
Financial Planning:
- Certified Financial Planner designation (CFP®)
Risk Management & Insurance:
- Ohio Life, Accident & Health Insurance (Series 11-35) exam pre-licensing course
- Ohio Property & Casualty Insurance (Series 11-36) exam pre-licensing course
- Both exams are administered by PSI Services LLC
- University Associate Certified Insurance Counselor (UACIC) designation
- Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation
